La Guaira

Long heralded by top anglers as a true Billfish Mecca, the bountiful offshore waters of Venezuela continue to provide visiting thrill seekers with amazing bluewater excitement, as the countless blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish, and swordfish that congregate in the area become the protagonists of numerous tug of wars with the anglers that come to Venezuela looking for the ultimate challenge.

When it comes to blue marlin, lots of fish are on the prowl off La Guaira throughout the year. Although our fleet releases a few specimen in the 500-700lbs class every year (a grander was released in 1997), most Venezuelan blues average 200-250lbs. However, what they lack in size they make up for in feistiness and in numbers.

In Venezuela blue marlin can be caught year around, but it's the winter and spring (Jan - May) that bring their larger concentrations to La Guaira waters. It is then that our boats average 4 to 8 shots per day, and have caught as many as 12 during a single full day charter. In the spring of 1999, 40 boats fishing the La Guaira Shootout set a new world record for most blue marlin caught during a tournament, amassing an incredible 256 blue marlin releases, more than 300 total billfish catches, and 11 grand slams achieved by participants in 3 days. Fishing for the blues centers around the famous

La Guaira Bank, known locally as "El Placer," is an underwater mound that rises nearly 50 fathoms from a 140-plus fathoms depth of the surrounding bottom. About 4 miles wide and 14 miles long, La Guaira Bank is just a brief 30 to 40-minute run from where the boats are docked. Aside from the incredible blue marlin action, the run of white marlin that takes place in La Guaira during the fall (August - December) is unparalleled and lets not forget the sailfishing. Many anglers easily amass double digit releases then, and some of our boats have recorded over 30 in a single day.
